There is so much to do in Orlando, you obligation to start now planning what you don't want to miss.
When we lived within Tampa, my favorite was Disney's Epcot Center. As for beach, I think the east coast have the best beaches if you're looking for the tradition "ocean" type shore - the beaches on the west coast are more soothing. If you choose the west coast, I would suggest farther south such as Sarasota or Fort Myers (prettier and cleaner than Clearwater, at least they be in the '90's).
Have fun!
The closest shoreline is Cocoa beach, roughly 45 minutes to an hour drive away. It's not the most beautiful seaside, but is the closest. I take my kids in that frequently and is a nice place to drive if you want to experience the beach for a hours of daylight while here.
Mardi Gras is going on at Universal Studios every Saturday night through April 19. Expect colossal crowds on those days, though. It's totally crazy.
EPCOT's flower and garden festival will also be going on during April. (It's in fact March 19 - June 1)
Four most important tourist areas... Disney, Universal, Downtown and International Drive. East coast beaches are give or take a few an hour away, west coast beaches in the region of and hour and a half. IMO, Clearwater Beach is the best (very relaxing, not 'springbreakish').
45 mins to the east is cocoa shoreline
