I live within the Austin area and would enjoy to say you would want to look within the northwest part or instrument south. If you look for anything in Central Austin it is going to be expensive, but given that you are coming from LA our opinion of expensive might be different.
As far as Tech job ( I work for the state so I'm not an expert)
AMD is located South, around Ben White (HWY 71) and IH 35 so a south location would be suitable, it is really growing lots of unusual stores and stuff.
Dell is more or less contained by Round Rock, which is to the north. I don't really go up in attendance much. But I know some people that moved from CA and they be shocked that they bought a house that was like peas in a pod size as theirs in CA and it be alot cheaper.
For a true Austin experience anything off of Lamar Blvd. fundamental Town Lake is cool. It puts you close to Down town and alot of restaurants.

I would have to argue the BBQ point--- I am from Lockhart, which is more or less 30 miles southeast of Austin. We are known as the BBQ Capital of Texas. There are 4 big places to choose from. The Salt Lick is fitting but not the best.
Look into the Circle C Ranch in far SW Austin. Just 10-15 miles from downtown. This is the cities largest planned community. Lot's of babyish families and growing. Many amenities including a swim center beside an Olympic pool. Good range of home pricing from moderate to high-end/upscale. Community continues to grow next to significant new retail contained by the area and importantly its done environmentally friendly...SW Austin sits on a protected aquifer, so law prevent overbuilding, so the area is much more unprocessed and open nouns with lots of oak trees. Located close to the Lady Bird Wildflower Center, a biking veloway, Circle C Golf Club, and most importantly, only 10 minutes away from The Salt Lick barbecue restaurant ... best BBQ contained by TX.
