ORLANDO, Fla. -- Three men suspected of shooting and injuring two Orange County sheriff's deputies at a resort in the neighbourhood Walt Disney World have extensive criminal collection with at least possible 76 arrests among the three, FLORIDA TODAY news partner WKMG Local 6 News reported today.
Investigators said Deputy Curtis Barnes, 42, and Deputy John Siller, 40, be shot at the Caribe Royal Resort on World Center Drive when they confronted three men apparently trying to break into a car Wednesday morning.
Barnes be shot in the right arm and Siller be shot in the chest, which be protected by a bulletproof vest, police said.
"It is apparent that his protective vest prevented a serious except life-threatening injury to Siller," an Orange County Sheriff's Office news release said.
After the incident, Ernest James Simmons, Lenlonnie Clark and Juan Rivera be taken into custody.
"We don't know anything about these thugs but but I'll bet you a paycheck that they have a criminal history," Orange County Sheriff Kevin Beary said on the scene.
"As for the sheriff's wager more or less these suspects having criminal background, he was exactly right," Local 6's Mike DeForest said Wednesday dark.
Deforest reported that records show that Clark have been arrested 46 times, Simmons 25 times and Rivera have been arrested 5 times.
"These guys hold extensive criminal histories," DeForest said.
Both deputies were transported to Orlando Regional Medical Center.
World Center Drive be closed between state Road 535 and International Drive. Traffic on Interstate 4 was back up for miles during the search.
Hotel hosts state council
The Caribe Royale Hotel, where on earth the shooting happened, be supposed to host a state council to study socio-economic conditions in the black community, including poverty, severity and drug abuse. Starting today, both Florida and Georgia attorneys standard were programmed to be at the hotel for a weekend conference on preventing black crime.
Attorney General Bill McCollum said in a statement it be "tragic irony" that the crime happened at like peas in a pod location where Georgia and Florida official were to convene to discuss the plight of minority communities.
"I hope this sobering incident will serve to rouse the conference's attendees in their pains to address the crimes that are tearing apart their neighborhoods and communities and prevent those crimes from continuing to come about," McCollum said.
Cindy and Charles Prevete were staying nearby and checked out Wednesday to fly home to Brooklyn, N.Y. The lockdown forced them to miss their flight, and the couple had to remuneration a $75 fee to conversion each of the seven airline tickets within their party.
"They whisk us away into the building and wouldn't let us depart from," Cindy Prevete said. "They told us they had an emergency situation."
