Natural history and Air Space museum can easily bring 4 hrs. + iMAX movie + walk around smithsonian should be well-mannered one.

Go down to the National Mall - see the Monuments and memorials for a couple of hours and spend an hour or so contained by a museum of your choice (hint Air and Space, National Museum of the American Indian, National Gallery of Art, National Museum of Natural History are top pics, but there are some great other museums on the shopping precinct.)
If you are talking nearly a layover at Dulles Airport - then mark that, since the thing to see is the Udvar-Hazy center right close the airport.

If you have merely a few hours, you'll never make it through the museums -- they are huge.
Instead, try seeing the Roosevelt/ Korean/ Lincoln/ Vietnam/ WWII/ Washington Memorials. You'll see plentifully of famous and moving sites. If you don't loiter too long, you'll definitely be capable of see all of them surrounded by 3 hrs and get some great photos. You can also snap photos of the White House and Capitol Buildings contained by the distance.

I'd head over to the Mall and right to the Air & Space Center (one of heaps Smithsonian museums) and/or the National Gallery of Art. Other museums are great, but these are very distinctive. From the mall, you can see the Capitol, Washington Monument and Lincoln Memorial -- but I'd newly take a few snapshots and next head for a museum. The Museum of American History is wonderful too, but right in a minute its closed for renovations...
Walking Around in George Town, Lots of shops in that... even if you doesn't have money to spend, it's still Fun...
I would go to the precinct area, and meander all around the Smithsonian buildings outside, and depending how speedily you walk I would step to see the monument and the Lincoln Memorial. Given that you can pick up the metro system not far from the monument and also near where on earth the mall nouns starts you have a few options. Just soaking surrounded by the architecture in the nouns can easily hold care of several hours. Enjoy!!
