I own a b&b in the Finger Lakes and lately stayed in NYC at the 114 Inn. It is verbs, reasonable and convenient to attractions. Tell them I recommended them, of you would.
Try checking out Travelzoo.com or ultimatefares.com. You might gain a decent do business. You can also try to pick an area and 3 or 4 star hotels surrounded by that area and heading your price on priceline.com.
You can go check out the hostels. The hostels are the cheapest place to stay surrounded by NYC. Many of them are located in convenient location where on earth the hotels are charging you hundreds of dollar per night...

The Senton Hotel on 26th st near 6th Ave.The Hotel New Yorker on 8th Ave at 47th st. Not fancy but affordable. But know that ANY cheap hotel surrounded by NYC no matter how verbs will be frequented by prostitutes and crackheads. MYOB and you will be fine.
