Carlos is correct. Northeast and southeast. The tourist areas are pretty protected just be aware of your surroundings. Don't catch off at unknown metro stops and saunter around. I don't know what the other poster is talking in the order of DC is dangerous. I live simply outside DC there is a shooting every week on the report. But again the tourist areas are safe purely use common sense.
Absolutely, yes. DC is divided into 4 quadrants, and I would avoid anything outside of Northwest, which is by far the safest. The other areas are OK only in a couple of blocks of Capitol Hill. Metrorail itself is fairly out of danger, but it does go to stations within all areas. Almost adjectives the touristy things are in not dangerous areas.

I hope you enjoy your pop in!
no
As others have said, you will be suitably safe on metro. I would stay away from the Southeast cubicle of DC. While the city is trying to revitalize that area including a tentative baseball stadium, i would be more cautious contained by that area. I don't know why a tourist would dance there though!
There are no places that tourists are plausible to go that are glorious crime areas. You will be fine on metro.

The reputation DC has as a high-crime city mostly date to the late 80s, and is no longer really true. Crime within DC tends any to be in distant bleak neighborhoods nowhere near the tourist center, or is the usual petty raid against tourists which ANY urban area have (New York, London, Rome, Paris, Munich, San Francisco, Minneapolis, Tortonto, etc.). Keep yourself alert for the latter, tourists are targeted because they are less expected to report crimes and to prosecute them anywhere in the world.

But you will be extraordinarily safe riding on metro (metro is one of the safest subway systems contained by the world - and high warranty now!) and visit any of the sights.
The most insecure part of DC is the southeast portion, I would avoid areas resembling Lincoln Park and Eastern Market. Thankfully, not much worth visiting is contained by these areas. The DC transit system, (called the Metro to locals) is a little pricey, but verbs and safe, so use it freely, because parking is a foremost pain and can be really expensive. All the touristy places, as very well as the center of the city which is mostly government organization buildings are all moderately safe. You can see plenty of things sticking contained by those areas, but for safe AND fun places to jump try Dupont Circle, Chinatown (which is a great bar/food area and not dodgy at all), and Georgetown. Excepting Georgetown, all are accessible by Metro. Go to http://www.wmata.com/ for details on public transit.
around the national theater dont go farther after that because they will have some strange society or drive
