Whats the best route from DC to Detroit? How unpromising are the roads going to be?
Are the highways nice, crap? What nice of weather this week (19 or 20 Dec), I know I'll have to budge through mountains.should I wait till spring? The tolls will cost me around 35 respectively way?

Yep, the turnpike will be your best choice.
Typically, the states i.e. runs through have it cleared moderately well.
The map route above it what I take. Just over 9 hrs from Northville to DC. Very little construction even surrounded by late August (finally!)
the weather is recovering and the roads are fine. i travelled your route a couple years ago and it was hell going through the mountains contained by west virginia, but after that it's no big deal.
Got moderately a bit of snow Sat. night-Sun morn but stopped now. Roads adjectives clear. I would suggest takeing the turnpike. Spring would be a nicer time if it doesn't matter
