Looking for something? Phipps or Lenox.
Looking for out of the norm and to visit an Atlanta institution: Little Five Points (around the corner from the Jimmy Carter Library).
Outlet? Discovery Mills. North out of town on I-85, Sugarloaf Parkway exit.
Just looking and if you find something, fine; if you don't, fine: Decatur, Andrews Square within the heart of Buckhead (pricey), or Virginia Highland.
Bonus: Looking for a funky street that also happens to hold an eclectic array of shops and restaurants: Cruise the mile or so called Cheshire Bridge Road.

Depending on what they similar to, here's a couple of other ideas:
Atlantic Station...again, not cheap, but a completely different atmosphere; the outlet malls up I-85 or GA400 are a conceivably; don't forget areas like the Marietta Square if they're into antiques or the Scott Antique Market at Atlanta Expo on the 2nd weekend of the month www.scottantiquemarket.com ; or if they are here when a core festival is going on...resembling a Greek Festival, maybe in that.

I would speak the obvious Lenox Square, Phipps, Northlake (i suppose its called surrounded by alpharetta) are nice malls.
There are outlets up 400 (North Ga premium outlets), tanger 75N, 85N and 75S...I believe.
If you like ecletic try little five points, virginia highlands.
