Any of the hotels contained by downtown will be walking distance to 6th street. There are tons of bars, restraunts, clubs etc adjectives within walking distance of eachother.also within is a free shuttle that roams around downtown.
If your looking to stay in downtown but not remuneration tons of money before I moved to austin I stayed at la quinta on 11th st...the prices are smaller number expensive and its basically a block away from the state possessions building and 5 blocks from the main strip...
Have fun...i only just moved here and I am still getting to know the lay of the land
