No its not contained by the south.

Generally the south is south of the Ohio River. So Virgina is in the south.
West Virginia is the northernmost southern state, the southernmost northern state, the easternmost midwest state, the westernmost eastern state. There's no other place close to this in the world.
Well, it is and it ain't. Actually, the Mason-Dixon line is the dividing splash between North and South. West Virginia was sector of Virginia until the Civil War and was indeed considered Southern up to that point. But the folks there supported the Union, unlike the rest of the state and seceeded, beside some help from those pesky Yankees. The mountain areas of several Southern states be very pro-Union during the time of war, especially in Tennessee. Maryland might awfully well own become part of the Confederacy, but the North stationed troops near very impulsive on and made sure it stayed loyal. Baltimore was especially pro-Confederacy. Kentucky never vanished the Union either, although it tried to be indeterminate for a while, before Confederate forces invaded. But partially of the Kentucky regiments which fought in the Civil War fought within the Confederate army, as did many from Maryland.
Exactly what George L. said!
