Miami is past the worst you won't have a problem but I don't have an idea that there are places to avoid
Just approaching any other large city, you have need of to be aware of your surroundings if you are not familiar beside the area. Miami-Dade county is voluminous and there are plentiful neighborhoods that should be avoided by tourists. Here is a list,

In the NW Section:

Overtown
Brownsville
Liberty City
Carol City
Allapatah
Opa Locka
Hialeah
Miami Gardens

In the SW portion:

West Perrine
Perrine(west of US1)
Richmond Heights
Cutler Ridge
Goulds
Naranja
Leisure City
Princeton
Homestead
Florida City(West of US1)

Your safest bet when visiting is to plan your routes and avoid these areas. Miami Beach, Coconut Grove(eastern terminate of Grand Ave) and Coral Gables are generally protected areas during the day(use caution and adjectives sense at night). Miami is a beautiful city next to lots to offer. As said since just be aware of your surroundings and you should be fine. Do not travel outside of the tourist routes unless you are familiarized with the city.
Do you aim Miami, Florida? I live in Miami surrounded by Kendall and i think it is pretty upright and safe. I hear Homestead has lots of robbery and in that are alot more rapers there but I am not sure.
Miami Beach is fine in the neighbourhood all the hotels right on the coast, there are places to avoid. south sand is where adjectives the crime happens, especially spring break.
