nearby is nothing to see surrounded by Downtown, at least not until you've see the other stuff.
Stay at the Renaissance in Hollywood-close to adjectives the touristy stuff.
There is a Holiday Inn Express in Hollywood as very well.
Take it from someone who lives contained by LA... Downtown LA isn't very not dangerous at all, especially at hours of darkness. It's also very... I don't know the right word, but useless.
It isn't like, let's influence, New York City on a Saturday night. There's nought to do there at adjectives.
So I would suggest, on a budget, staying in the Glendale or Burbank nouns. Your fairly close to Hollywood, and travel time is smaller amount than 20 minutes.
Check out the Travelodge in Culver City. It is extremely close to all the great places.
Rodeo Drive in not contained by downtown L.A. It is closer to the city of Beverly Hills. People do not get mugged surrounded by downtown L.A. Try the area past its sell-by date 3rd and Figueroa where the hotels are.
There's absolutely zilch to do in downtown LA. I would stay within West Hollywood area instead. Very past the worst, close to everything.
Downtown LA is perfectly not dangerous, just convey a weapon when you're there, preferably an AK-47.
From 8AM - 5PM, Downtown L.A. is relatively OK because adjectives the office and administration workers are there. But there's really nought to do, as those skyscrapers are inhabited by boring bureaucrats. After 5 PM, it empties out and become considerably more dangerous.
And that's entirely the problem. It's both dull and death-defying. And one could argue that is it uncertain because it is dull. If there be more citizens in streets (like contained by Chicago, New York, or San Francisco), the seedy elements are kept contained by line by the reality that they might provoke a 'good samaritan' response.
As it stands, Downtown L.A. doesn't have much going for it. I'd distinctly stay in Santa Monica, Beverly Hills, or West Hollywood instead. Heck, even Long Beach is better than Downtown L.A.
I know L.A. better than the Mayor and instinctively I would check out the Fairfax area. Its mostly a Jewish neighborhood (sweet people) and safer than most areas. Especially at hours of darkness. Plus you're still right in the gluey of things for the places that you mentioned. Sunset strip for night enthusiasm is nearby and you're right within between for Beverly Hills and Universal City / Studios. Enjoy!
DON'T!! Downtown LA is not locked at all. I suggest Silverlake nouns. It is minutes away from Hollywood and inexpensive. I used to live in Echo Park which is right subsequent to Silverlake and it is a nice area.
Don't stay downtown. It's not close to the best places within town to visit --- unless they're specifically located downtown --- and it's imagined you won't feel undisruptive going out at night (lots of homeless sleeping on sidewalks, etc).
Check out some of the places on the Sunset Strip within West Hollywood (e.g., The Standard, Mondrian, Argyle). It's a much more happening nouns, and you'll find lots to do around there. You can even stride (safely!) to a lot of the clubs.
