Its not as if you can put in the picture when you cross the "border", there is no balustrade separating the communities..the homeless roam around and are everywhere..Yes its nice, and yes there are homeless.
I visit Santa Monica over New Years as a tourist and there be more homeless people in that and alternative people than anywhere else I visit unfortunately. Food be fairly pricey and the service be extremely ordinary. Except contained by our hotel restuarant (at the Holiday Inn Santa Monica - our breakfast was great and so be our waiter.)
The pier is fun but I think if you lived here you would get over the touristy aspect pretty swift.
