I agree near the previous respondents: The Fulton Mall is great for the style of clothes you're looking for.
But you mention that you'll be in Manhattan, and Brooklyn can be a bit of a schlep if you're foreign with the City. What's more, it doesn't perceive as "New York-y" in some respect.
Consequently, I uplift you to check out the Fashion District. Set aside a morning or afternoon, and head south down Eighth Avenue from 42nd Street to 31 Street. You'll intervene all comportment of stores -- most of them very unassuming -- beside every conceivable style represented. Don't be put off by the dearth of "fanciness:" The Fashion District is about bargain!
Toward the end of your trek (at 34th Street), you'll be surrounded by Herald Square, home to number of major stores, as economically as the Manhattan Mall. Between all of these venue, I assure you you're boyfriend will find things that appeal to him . . . and at good prices to boot!
Afterwards, you can other make the trip to Brooklyn.
Enjoy your trip!

Second the vote for Fulton Mall above. Take the A,C, or F subway to Jay Street, exit at Fulton St., walk down the precinct -- there are dozens of shopping choices.
Fulton Mall in Brooklyn (it's lone one subway stop from Manhattan). There are a lot of stores and vendor, huge selection. And, you'll be effective Juniors and you can get some of the notorious cheesecake.
Harlem, up around 125th St.
