Is LA really that desperate? what areas to avoid?
.. I was curious to see the "hood" to give somebody a lift pix.. any suggestions? like love takin pix so jus to catch a picture of the inner life.. is time time safe?

This just have "bad idea" written adjectives over it...
The interesting thing in the region of LA is that pretty much everywhere is "bad." At tiniest it is if you are from a nice, safe suburb! In a million dollar neighborhood, you will still see cast-offs cars and some trashed homes. In the rich neighborhoods with 3-4 million dollar homes, everyone have bars on the window or high gate all around to protect their houses. Despite the prices of the homes, the street signs and walls are still vandalize with graffiti. Even surrounded by the very rich areas, similar to Bel Air and Beverly Hills, graffiti is pretty common on the principal streets, though deeper in the neighborhoods is better. Even after two years here, I still don't surface totally safe even surrounded by the very expensive neighborhoods because they aren't that far from really desperate neighborhoods!
I do not go to the really desperate areas like Compton or Inglewood, and I never will. If you want to see the "hood," basically watch some crime shows or look at photographs. Those those will not be happy to see some little rich tourist taking photos of them, and it isn't as artistic as you seem to consider.
Why don't you check out the celebrity areas instead? They are purely as scummy, they just return with rich being that course! You can get your share of the hood a short time ago driving through an average neighborhood.
I would be *very* careful if I be you. You never know who will object to have thier picture taken or who yu might offend. You're not chitchat about going to the zoo or Disneyland...these are solid people and actual homes who unfortunately hold to live if fear most of the time.
Most places are okay, but I wouldn't be caught in Watts, West Hollywood, Inglewood, Crenshaw at hours of darkness. If you're taking pictures, I'd be more conscious of who and what you're taking pics of - you can still be contained by the wrong place in the daytime.
Obvious - West Hollywood at darkness is the sleaze! Too many dive tavern drunks may not get you shot, but cameras aren't other barf proof XD

Yes daytime is safer, careless you could try Compton Skid Row some areas of Inglewood Watts and Lynwood in some places

Why not just survey a movie? It's a city, not a theme park.
Uh, curious tourists and gang flurry do not mix. LA is pretty safe, but it is where on earth the Crips and Bloods started and still exist. There are many ethnic gang too. The LAPD has specific Anti-gang unit. All cities have angry areas and LA is the second largest city in the US..you do the math. Gang areas are not a tourist attraction.
If you really want to shift to a violent nouns to get your kick, do a search on Gang sternness Los Angeles or on the Crips/Bloods.

If you're just out and in the order of taking pictures of "the hood", be REAL vigilant who and what you're taking pictures of. I'm afraid you might stand out similar to a sore thumb. And if you DO find some real gangbangers, they might enjoy something to say something like someone taking their picture. If you're going to go within there, you have better look like you belong here. It's not a place to play around or get caught taking photos of "the hood" because you think it's cool. If they infer you're a wannabe, you could be in serious trouble.
Why do you want to clutch pictures, anyway? There's nothing glamorous more or less it. It's a shame, really, that people own to live in "time of war zones".
Just remember this: "hood" is short for "neighborhood", as in "My neighborhood". How comfortable would you be if someone come down your street taking photos of your house and street, and possibly you?
