For those of you that enjoy be on an amtrak?
Is it a pleasant experience? I'm taking a five hour trip to test it out previously i go on a long trip.

It's fine to ride it.
Also, they provide power outlets, so you can bring your computer and some movies to entertain yourself minus worrying about your battery-operated dying.
There is a food cart if you find hungry. But be careful to budget for this, as it is a bit pricey.
I found it to be a nice experience. You don't enjoy to worry nearly traffic and it is nice to just look out the fanlight. I always bring a book or my disc player. There is a snack car so if you attain hungry or thirsty you are taken care of. Have a flawless trip.
I rode the amtrak twice contained by my life within the fifth grade. We took a class trip to Washington DC an i be terrified because the year formerly, one of the students pulled the emergancy stop cord as a joke and flipped the train over! (not funny) My story be not to make you affraid but to say-so that "I" personally couldn't savour my ride do to the fact that i be watching everyone to make sure not a soul did the same to use too! Other than that it be an experience because i had never riden a train beforehand! You'll be okay!
Been roundtrip from Orange County, CA to Redding, Ca. ( near Mount Shasta )
Trip took 18 to 24 hours respectively way. About 600 miles.
Was greatly of fun. (Just do not over pack), I even took my mountain bike with me.

I rode from Chicago to san francisco non stop last year (about 2 1/4 days travelling) and I definitely loved it!
I travelled coach, and met loads of really interesting people. My friend get a roomette, so she got free food, shared bathroom etc. I have an idea that she probably met less those, but she probbaly slept better than me (although the seats be comfy and did recline well). I concluded up waking at more or less 4 or 5 in the morning and not one able to carry back to sleep. Of course that designed I could go and sit contained by the observation sports car with everyone else who couldnt sleep, so it be kind of resembling having a sleepover (only near people you would never suppose at a sleepover). If you dont like reunion new family it probably isnt the trip for you.
I got on really capably with the train crew, possibly because me and my friend made sure we made an action to chat to them. Anyway they would wink at me whenever they saw me and they were really right at telling us things to do surrounded by SF when we arrived. They alos made sure they made announcements at viewing places over the tannoy (as well as lots of others - one guy used to come on the tannoy, sing a song and after cut off next to no explantion, and there be quite repeatedly calls for relatives to join games contained by the bar car)
The supervision car be really good - amzaing view of the sierras. My hint - enjoy a look at the route maps on the amtrak site and pick out ones that give the impression of being to go through some scenic places (the California Zephyr or the coastal starlight spring to mind) http://www.amtrak.com/servlet/ContentSer...
I expect staying on the one train for the entire length of the trip was great as you get to know people for a time better - however it is possible to stop off surrounded by cities along the way and rejoin a latter train if you want to - I know some people who did this and enjoy it.
Be prepared for delays though on the long journey they can be as much as 8 hours)

Five hour trips are much different than an overnight trip. First of adjectives, for a five hour trip, you will just be riding coach, I am assuming. You will probably also want to bring your own snacks, as the snacks that you can buy on the train are a bit pricey.
As for your long trip, I HIGHLY recommend a roomette or bedroom suite for your overnight ride. You won't enjoy to deal next to snoring passengers or crying babies, or the close to in that you would enjoy to deal near like contained by coach. Second of all, your meal are all included within the price of the ticket (which can add up if you ride coach on a long trip because it will be tricky to bring ALL your food for the trip along). Also, there are private bathrooms for respectively sleeping car that lone sleeping car passenger are allowed to use. And did I mention the showers? Coach passengers singular have access to a bathroom.no shower! If you stay contained by a bedroom suite, there's a bathroom/shower right in your suite. It's small, but it does the living.
One thing to preserve in mind for your long trip:
Amtrak is seedy for running late. It's not Amtrak's eccentricity however. Amtrak unfortunately does not own most of the tracks they use, so they hold to move over and let freight and other passenger trains (that own the rails) go by before Amtrak is allowed to use the rail. So if you have to be somewhere contained by a hurry or at a specific time, DON'T USE AMTRAK! If you are not worried about person someplace at a certain time for your long trip, later Amtrak is the way to turn. It's almost like a leave in itself! :-)
