I've been living surrounded by Koreatown since 1999 and have watch it slowly become gentrified. Strangely enough, while the characterless and institutional apartment complexes own attracted more of an upper-middle class resident, I wouldn't say that crime have abated. I would vote it's generally past the worst in the business areas due to the big traffic caused by the unconstrained number of restaurants and bars. However, I would influence that there are a righteous number of muggings especially on the quieter streets. I would say an apartment where on earth you have reserved parking implicit your building would be optimal. A general rule of thumb to follow is the more north you walk (closer to the affluent Hancock Park), the safer it becomes. Generally, I find areas south of Olympic Blvd to be somewhat sketch.
That one said, I wouldn't trade living in Koreatown for any other nouns (other than downtown) - it's centrally located (you can actually follow that proverbial LA dictum often hear by ppl on their cell phones: "it'll only lug me 15 minutes to get there"). It's a culturally rich nouns filled near great Korean food, good Mexican food, and an actual darkness life.

I would seriously consider getting a roommate - not only to let go on cash, but also for the added indemnity.
If you're still interested in living within Koreatown, you might want to look into the Gaylord Apartments. It's an ol-skool Hollywood-style apartment building located on Wilshire & Kenmore. It's a beautiful building that caters to singles. You'll probably know how to find somewhat decent rent for a small studio and they own a 24 hour doorman in the lobby.

Koreatown is OK if you're Korean. However, if I were a single non-Korean feminine with a cat, I wouldn't stay nearby. For one thing, you're going to enjoy a hard time getting a place that take pets. Second, being womanly, you're going to have a knotty time being taken seriously by Korean males. It lately seems similar to all the Korean females I've see are tough as nails (like Lane's mom on Gilmore Girls).
For $800 per month beside a cat, you're going to have to settle for some to some extent unsafe conditions. If you're used to living the easy existence in the 'burbs near your parents, it could be a rather rude awakening. I'm guessing that you've checked out craigslist, and finding it difficult to afford a place. Before moving out here, I would emphatically get a few address and come visit to capture a feel for the neighborhoods. Below is my standard "moving to LA" answer.

It's all going on for supply and demand: If it's surrounded by SoCal, then it's not going to be cheap to initiate with. If it's verbs and safe, later it's more expensive. If you need obedient schools, join a couple hundred bucks a month on top of it.
If you want to live here and delight in the weather, then you hold to pay for it. You put up next to the smog and the traffic, enjoy the weather and earnings your rent or mortgage. My advice is to start checking out craigslist, rent.com, and apartments.com if you are looking to rent. You’ll like lightning see that the minimum rent for a non-war zone is about $1,000-$1,200 per month for a studio or 1BR. Really nice areas (like the West LA area) glibly run $3,000 or more.
"LA" is such a big place, there are so oodles neighborhoods/cities where you can live. Of course, even in a city or neighborhood, there are safer section and less-safe sections.

To the east: South Pasadena, parts of Pasadena, Altadena, Arcadia, Monrovia, Glendora, San Dimas, Laverne, Azusa, Rancho Cucamonga.
Along the beach: Santa Monica, Redondo Beach, Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach, Torrance, Palos Verdes, Rancho PV.
In Orange County aka "The OC": Seal Beach , Huntington Beach , Newport Beach , Corona Del Mar , Laguna Beach , Dana Point , Capistrano Beach , San Clemente , Brea, Yorba Linda, Orange, Tustin, Irvine, Laguna Hills, Rancho Santa Margarita, Lake Forest
