Their equipment is old and poorly maintain. LAX is just a appalling airport. Unfortunately, even after all these years of so-called "improvements", it hasn't gotten any better. I other use one of the smaller alternatives (Burbank, John Wayne) whenever possible.
At a time when other U.S. airports are offering full-service brewpubs, sushi bars, and seafood restaurants -- LAX have decided Burger King is pious enough for the heaps.
At a time when other U.S. airports have done away beside fuel guzzing buses in favor of sleek indoor trams -- LAX have decided to increase the number diesel vehicle it uses.
At a time when other U.S. airports try to guarantee adequate places -- LAX still has inhabitants sitting on the crowded floors.
Although LAX has more direct flights, it's lately not worth the trouble anymore.
