West Hollywood is extremely safe. It is patrol by the California Sheriff and not LAPD, so response time is much quicker.
You are just east of Beverly Hills and logically, just west to Hollywood. Plenty of shopping, clubs and a extraordinarily eclectic choice of small theater.
The only downside is that West Hollywood is not close to any freeways, so you hold to travel on streets a while to get to or from a freeway on ramp. Also rents can be loving of pricey, but if you can afford it, there are some great luxury apartments and condos.

If you can afford it, West Hollywood is a fine place to live. It's quite protected and clean. Lots of great restaurants and shopping too.
However, it's also a thoroughly liberal city...governed by a fairly odd alliance of LGBT and Jewish groups. If you're homophobic or anti-semitic, I'd recommend you to look elsewhere.
Another issue to consider is the noise. West Hollywood is the center of L.A.'s nightlife, so the streets are other buzzing at night. If you don't resembling street noise, it's celebrated to live away from the two main drags (Santa Monica Blvd. and Sunset Blvd.)
Other than that, I outstandingly recommend it.
