Try the Southside and the Strip District. There are some great bars contained by the Southside; really affordable drinks, great atmosphere, etc. The Strip District has more clubs such as Deja Vu and one on the Allegheny River. It's a different scene than Southside, which is mostly only just bars. Station Square also have a really great club, can't remember the name of it. It's resembling a combination of 3-4 clubs in one, respectively with a different issue.
StationSquare, Strip District, Southside
As Far as Restaurants go: You really should munch through on top of Mt. Washington at smallest once - the restaurants up there are a short time pricier and very formal - if that's not what you're looking for after steer clear. I'd recommend Isabella's or Monterrey Bay on Mt. Washington. The Downtown Cultural District is home to a lot of Great restaurants too - Six Penn Kitchen, Trilogy, and Nine on Nine. All great - Nine on Nine is probably the best restaurant within the city.
If you just want handrail food eat at Fat Head's - 18th & Carson Street within South Side - HOT wings and chicken sandwich, great burgers, homeade chips and more than 40 beers on tap.
As far as nightlife I wouldn't recommend the Strip District. But it's base more on personal taste. Most of the clubs, within my opinion, are trying to be things that they are not. They're these Vegas impersonation with overpriced bottle service and a giving of annoying atmosphere.
Station Square is a complex of Chain Restaurants (Hard Rock, Hooters) and a few Clubs - it caters to a more touristy crowd. Matrix is Popular as a dance club - in that are 4 rooms with different theme. Buckhead Saloon has live band on weekends and cheap drinks til 12. Palm Bar is smaller and more formal.
But the South Side is the heart of Pittsburgh nightlife - there are literally over 100 bar. It's mostly college bars but near is definite mixture. Smokin' Joe's is the best every man bar. Great beer inspection. Clean but not too clean -it is a inn. That is at 20th and E Carson St.
Town Tavern, Diesel, and Jimmy D's are the more popular dance places surrounded by the south side.
Jack's is a popular dive bar - other been in that - open 365 days a year - other a crowd of all ages.
Elixir and Nakama are more popular for drinks within a lounge type setting - more popular with a post college, more mannerly crowd. Nakama is actually a Sushi and Hibachi Restaurant beside a larger bar - located at 17th & Carson.
The North Shore nouns around the Sports Stadiums is also home to about 15 bar. All of which are very spanking new and within walking distance of respectively other. They're nice. But is NICE what you're really looking for? It's not where I'd transport someone to get a true discern for Pittsburgh.
Go to the nouns they call the Strip District. No- it's not "strippers." It's a strip of manor that used to be all warehouse, and has be converted to really cool shops, restaurants, and nightclubs. Make sure you get through a Primanti Brother's sandwich!
