Chicago lodging for a possible amount?
I'm planning a mom-daughter trip to Chicago in April for a 16th birthday present. Shopping, I don`t know a show--just 2 nights. Besides the over-priced hotels downtown (IMHO), are nearby any more reasonable priced lodging someone could recommend surrounded by the northern suburbs? How about the Metra--is it risk-free & easy to capture to from the suburbs? As you can tell, I'm totally oblivious about the big city stuff. We've stayed surrounded by Arlington Heights in days gone by and driven to the city, but that's a pain IMO plus, parking is expensive. Thanks! Oh, if you know of verbs, safe but probably priced lodging downtown (near the Mag Mile) let me know--we don't mind walking any.

if you're spending all your time contained by the city, staying in the suburbs is a rubbish of time. The best bet is to either stay a swift walk from the CTA out by O'Hare (there are hotels resembling the Westin O'Hare or the Renaissance that are a block from the CTA blue line) or at about duplicate price you can try the Travelodge on Harrison St and Wabash. All three of these are around $120/130 per night for the mid-April weekend I checked. All three are on Expedia.
There are other hotels cheaper than this out by the airport, in recent times be sure they're walking distance from the CTA, or that they have a shuttle to any the airport or Rosemont station.
The Travelodge is about a mile from the Mag Mile, but it's not out of the opening and you can use CTA buses to go up Michigan from at hand if you don't want to walk. Michigan Avenue along Grant Park is intensely picturesque so the walk is nice. Wabash, in opposition, has the el, so you don't want to saunter down that street underneath it unless you have to.
As for Metra, it is protected and reasonably comfortable. There are hotels that are contained by downtown Evanston an easy step from the Metra stop at Davis Street, but they are more expensive than the ones I've listed above. Walking from the stations to other areas downtown is risk-free all hours of daylight and evening.
You might try staying in Lincoln Park; you'll be significantly closer to where on earth you want to spend your time, and the cost is only bit greater than the ones listed above. The convenience may be worth it. The Days Inn and Inn of Lincoln Park are nice; both are possible and right at Clark & Diversey, a vibrant and safe neighborhood:

Taking the Metra from the burbs to the city is definately terribly safe and better than driving since it's close to $30 to park for 30 minutes. There is a hotel downtown on Michigan but a little ways from the Mag Mile that's one and only like $80 a dark which is pretty cheap. You could also stay by Ohare which is safe and cheap and closer to the city than the suburbs. You could also I don`t know stay in Naperville. They enjoy a nice little downtown area next to a lot of shopping and restaurans and a short time comedy club. It's also right by the train station so you could easily hop the metra into the city. Naperville have some business hotels near downtown which bestow pretty good rates.
