From Louisiana, I'd head north into the Ozarks. I'll be crossing them from east to west and pay for this October. Head north into Arkansas. From their set your sights on Harrison (AR)/Branson(MO) or Poplar Bluff (MO).

Route 65 north of Little Rock winds through the mountains towards Branson. It's not big and the towns enjoy not morphed into modern steel and glass shopping malls. You'll find adjectives the conveniences of Wal-mart and Dollar Stores along the way, but plenty of woods. Buffalo River National Riverway is unspoiled backcountry, great for canoes. (weekends it can be resembling a city) Take a few side routes north and you'll find plenty of small towns that look unaffected by time. Eureka Springs to the west have kept it's Victorian appeal, but has started to grow around the edges. Branson is bi-polar. The old-fashioned town on the river is still the old town, little changed. The Music City to the west is asphalt and immense box buildings. Plenty of entertainment choices.

Heading towards Poplar Bluff would be my choice. The Arkansas flats along the Mississippi River (extending 40-50 miles from the Mississippi) is open grown near towns that have fall into disrepair. As you enter the Ozarks, the roads twist and the hill appear. In the eastern side of the Ozarks of Missouri, there are lots of small towns and State Parks. Elephant Rocks, Johnson's Shut-ins, Big Springs, Merrimac Caverns, Ozarks Nat'l Scenic Riverway.

Of course, you merely need to director north on one side or the other of the Mississippi River. Small towns abound with their novel river attributes.
Drive the blue ridge parkway, including skyline drive in Front Royal, VA to Cherrokee, NC. Can also stir through the great smoky mountains to Gatlinburg, TN. They all connect to respectively other to make a continous drive. My husband and I took the trip next to our daughters a couple of yrs ago. It was fun we didn"t get any reservations or anything, just started driving. We stopped when we looked-for and kept no schedule. There are lots of things to see and do. It may be a obedient idea though to look at hotels along the route on the internet past you go. Most night we found really good hotels, but I remember one darkness in distinctive that we drove forever before we found anywhere to stay, and it be a dive...We could have stopped roughly an hour earlier if we simply had realize how far it was until the subsequent decent sized town beside a hotel. Check out the blue ridge parkway website at www.blueridgeparkway.org
US 1 along the CA coast up to Washington is only spectacular.

Don't miss mount rushmore in South Dakota. All along US 90 within SD you'll see signs for buffalo products and prairie dog towns and the bad lands are cool.

Gosh - what a broad topic. Maybe if you be talking in the region of a region of the country I could be of more help.

Why don't you budge from national park to national park?
