Cobra is right. If you are far away hold it mailed. Tell your friend to turn the phone past its sell-by date, wrap it in bubble wrap and after box it up and mail it. Definitely catch insurance.
Also, I would make sure to letters your friend the money for the postage and something else extra for doing this for you. You were the one that messed up and presently you are asking your friend to spend time and money on your mistake. It is up to you to make it right.

Gas is pretty damn expensive in the present day. If you're further than half an hour away, simply have her ship it to you. Make sure she ships it next to insurance, in a well-padded box.
