Long Beach is pretty nice in places. I don't know roughly speaking the LBC stuff and the rap videos, but it's once of the largest port cities for trade within the LA area.
Some areas are downright scary and others are awesome. CSU nouns is good - Pine Street (near 1st) is awesome as all right as Shoreline Village :-)

Seriously, the CSU nouns is nice, as is the downtown area on the waterfront - lots of correct reasturants.

Just look out if you go a couple of blocks within the wrong direction you can end up within a bad nouns. If you stay close to CalState LB you are usually ok.
Of course it is all relative, if you want past the worst visit Irvine.
Maybe if a sports car on PCH or 7th Street decides to hit you. Those are the leading streets that border CSULB. The neighborhoods aroud there are hugely nice so you don't need to verbs about getting shot, mugged or raped.
There are over 490,000 populace that live in LB, we aren't adjectives gangsta's. If you want to see what some of LB looks like than keep watch on CSI Miami. Only the sweeping shots from the sky are Miami, the stuff filmed on the ground is LB. Quite a few times when I'm driving home thru the Bayshore Street Marina I endorse Miami Dade police cars that were used surrounded by filming. Long Beach also have quite a few Art Deco buildings within downtown and the streets that are 3 blocks from the ocean, they saturate in pretty smooth for Miami.
Our neighborhoods of Naples, Belmont Shore, Belmont Heights and Bluff Park are full of multi-million dollar homes. 2nd Street in Belmont Shore have quite a few restaurants, shops and bar that I'm sure you will frequent if you are a student at Cal State.
If you are along the coast or in the Belmont Shore neighborhood, afterwards you are safe. Otherwise, you best be packing some fry!
The area around CSULB is really nice and out of danger. As with any traveling, freshly be mindful of your surroundings and don't put yourself in danegerous positions, especially at hours of darkness.
