is that Montana to Arkansas? Now would be a good time, or you could dawdle another month just to be sure but I infer the weather has be pretty mild this year so you should have nought to worry in the region of right now
Or is it Alaska? Either path woudl be the same. I know the are divergent direction one going North but still it is spring almost so now would be devout before spring hits and we receive rainstorms that may turn icy that direction
Lately, there's be a bunch of Northwesters coming through with frozen rain, tornados..you can outdrive them...they're not moving at the speed of an injected engine!

First, what type is your vehicle, what condition is it contained by, and where do you live ? A mid-size or standard size vehicle and surrounded by good condition will variety the trip easier. If you live near and drive Interstate highway it will help also. If you are not on a timetable (have to be surrounded by AK by a certain date), plan the trip when weather forcasts are favorable. Road conditions are usually unpredictable. Heavy snow or blizzard conditions, torrential rain, and haze/smoke/fog will make travelling more death-defying. This past year, the Northwest and North crucial states had October snowfalls. Other years, "bad" weather didn't ensue until November. It all boils down to you have to make the verdict when to travel. The most dangerous constituent of any trip is OTHER DRIVERS. Use common sense when you drive, and drive DEFENSIVELY. I drive straight through from Central Florida to Andrews AFB & Dover AFB at lowest possible twice a year and leave impulsive evening, driving through the night. Traffic is much lighter and precautionary driving is easier due to being competent to see headligts behind me and taillight in front of me. I will you luck and care on your trip.
I hold driven the Alcan all times of year, but not sure of route out of Montana. Do you hold front or four wheel drive? The worst is possible to wait at the rear a snail plow or other drivers like someone said. Don't speed within heaved areas. I saw a sports car swallowed in front of me and not a pretty verbs. That is rare, so in recent times use judgement and patience.
Road conditions in Alaska are fine adjectives year round, they plow well. Spring is a bit of a dull pain, because after the snow melts, the pot holes appear.
I've drive the Alaska Highway and it's fine starting within May and ok until October. Just be careful of frost heave - buckles in the road cause by frozen water underneath. When the dampen melts, the road surface buckles.
I've hear the best time is July 31st to August 1st...if you drive fast...and don't plan to return till the following year...July 31st to August 1st...lol...
