18 year mature Moving To NYC?
Hello, i am a recent High School Graduate From Miami,Florida. I graduated near a 3.1 GPA and am looking forward to attend Boroughs of Manhattan Community College for two years, then on too Brooklyn College and hopefully grad institution for Journalism. My parents split with a bitter divorce, so i enjoy little income from my mother, I have 2 Years Job Experience At Starbucks. And i enjoy $20,000 in nest egg. My tuition will be payed with other money. I am wondering if i can survive contained by the city, with a 1 Bedroom apartment and minimal luxuries. The apartment can be contained by close proximity of Manhattan but Brooklyn,Queens, etc. is fine. Anyone can spot me the cost of living (apartments) cost of food etc. Also as an extra note, i will not own a car, but use public transportation.

Okay, first for transportation. I live within Brooklyn, and I commute to Manhattan by bus and subway. I pay $76 dollars a month to ride however heaps times I want, and most commuters that I've talked to do like. You can buy the card at almost any subway station. The biggest problem with the commute is that it's other extremely crowded. You'll find yourself walking a lot.
A studio apartment within Brooklyn runs at about $950 a month. We shopped around and overall we thought Brooklyn be the best place to live. Depending on where you are within Brooklyn, it's 10-20 minutes to Manhattan. Harlem is also okay, and there be some nice apartments in the Bronx. I devise it's a better deal to return with a more expensive apartment and find a roomie, honestly. I live in a two-bedroom next to my friend and my part of the rent is around $700. For a nice but still cheap nouns, look at Bay Ridge. I have a friend who lives nearby, and they have the most wonderful neighbors ever. Our combined utilities are give or take a few $150, which I think is pretty tolerable since we both work. We don't pay for electricity, though.
As for food... our motto is, the cheaper the better. We buy deeply in bulk, just eat fruits and vegetables that are contained by season, and it is still expensive - about $100 a month for respectively of us. We also eat profoundly of the same entry... Avoid fancy markets if you're on a budget, they're extremely appealing. If you're planning to have a dark out or something that will cost money prepare to save on everything else.
Overall, we close to living here. I'm 19, by the way :) You can patently make it appear. I have fun merely walking on the street and looking at buildings, sometimes my friends and I will go rollerblading contained by Central Park, you can go for a put your foot and buy some food on the road... We try to do things that are cheap, but fun. Sometimes cinema societies will enjoy free screenings of movies, and we'll go and foot a few dollars as donation. Honestly, if you look for them there are plenty of opportunity to enjoy yourself lacking spending a lot of money.

nyc is a great city. here so many starbucks here. you will definitly take a job in that. now the cost of living is illustrious if you want to comfortably. i suggest you find a roommate because paying rent on your own will be difficult. search soaring and low for an apartment. another for an apt. is renting a room in a house. some run similar to $125 to $200 a week or $500 to $700 a month. save your money contained by the bank. if you can don't spend the money on rent it will progress fast. as far as food, we own costco, bj's, and other inexpensive supermarkets. so you buy in bulk. $76 for metrocard is a honest idea. but buy it on a credit card if you can because if unfortunatly you lose it will be replaced. i hope this help. take adjectives the advice you can procure and you will be okay. good luck.
Oh wow.. i basically thought about doing duplicate thing a couple months ago.. very well I still am except I am moving to San Francisco instead of NYC. I am a high arts school senior and am moving out of Florida ASAP when I graduate.. I don't want to go to college here and I am going to be paying for college myself. Ive if truth be told lived in NYC though and can report to you about this plan of yours.
First of adjectives.. you WILL need roommates. You can live within a good apartment near 3 other people surrounded by a nice neighborhood in brooklyn or queens for just about 650-700 including utilities (your share) a month. You wont be able to live contained by Manhattan... MAYBE, and I mean MAYBE you could afford a roommate situation surrounded by Harlem or Washington Heights for the same price but they wont be as polite of quality as contained by Queens or BK. But if you want to go to Brooklyn College you must live within BK because the commute from anywhere else would be too much. Plus, Washington heights is somewhat far away from midtown and downtown but it is close to City College, if you want to progress there (cheap 4 year school).
Monthly MTA card is 76, its great.. works for subways and buses and have unlimited uses for the month. Food will be maybe within the 200 range if you are single and guzzle normally. Food contained by NYC is normally priced surrounded by the boroughs, but is outrageous in manhattan.. in actual fact, everything is overpriced in manhattan. You will also want to budget for new clothes because the weather surrounded by NYC is in two extremes, immensely hot in the summer (like miami, and yes, I believe at hand is humidity), and very cold within the winter. I would budget 50 a month for clothes for at least the first year. You will also entail to budget for savings to use on form related things.. like good 50 bucks a month to use on your yearly dentist stop by or your yearly eye exam. You also will requirement to budget in at lowest 100 for other expenses and money you spend on extra stuff. You need to be believable.. you may say you wont spend any extra currency but you always will. Going to McDonalds, vending machines, buying a magazine, or anything resembling that is considered extra. Also budget surrounded by 80 bucks a year for a PO box.
I believe all-in-all you will need to be making at least possible 500 a month along with your rent within order to survive minimally, so more or less 1200 a month after taxes.
A couple tips:
Dont live in clean jersey. Establish a residence in NYC and maintain your rental receipts and pay stubs. If you live contained by NY for a year you can pay instate tuition at colleges here.
Support yourself and take minimum amounts of $$ from your mom. If you can prove you earnings all your own expenses you qualify for instate tuition and possibly financial aid.
Stay away from some of the east neighborhoods contained by BK. East New York, Brownsville, Flatbush, and Bed-Stuy are cheap to live in but are ghettoes! Queens and Manhattan are not detrimental, Bronx is so-so, but BK has some of the most risky neighborhoods in the adjectives city.
Be careful within what ethnic enclave you live. Some neighborhoods are so ethnic that every sign except the street signs are in Chinese/Korean/Greek/Spanish. You might distinguish this though, coming from Miami.
Dont blow your savings if you are trying to dance to school.. you enjoy enough save up for tuition at a college in NYC. Work as little as you necessitate to in writ to pay the bills. No more than 25-30 hours a week. It would be foolish to try to live on your own (without roommates) merely because you have so much save up.
Try finding a job as server or busser and gain experience within the serving industry. It is VERY lucrative in manhattan. 2 years experience can territory you a good available job at a restaurant where you can label good tips.
BTW.. I've hear that Brooklyn College (gorgeous campus btw), while somewhat easy to seize into, has a complex curriculum so make sure you can set off work and school competently.

You'll conspicuously need a roommate, the rent will exterminate you. I lived in Jersey City, NJ for awhile surrounded by a 3 bedroom apart with 2 other women, we adjectives were paying $900. You can probably find something cheaper contained by Brooklyn or Queens compared to Manhattan. A decent apartment within Manhattan will be thousands. I also lived in Brooklyn but at that time I wasn't paying rent. Many college students rent contained by Brooklyn though.
