The original Ray Bari place on 11th St and Sixth be Definitly the absolute best and THE oriingal RAY !! Of course that be then. Last year it changed owners and is in a minute Korean owned, ha ha, with Mexican workers. I havn't eat there lately but from looking surrounded by the window I'd articulate they have copied the ingenious trade-mark thick-cheeze thick-crust and watery onion slice, which used to be out of this world. Maybe it still is?! But anyway I hold been told that piza maker can buy different grades of cheese; the better of which "prouduce" more oil on cooking contained by the oven. So that with the best cheeses, no grease is used in making the pizza. Certainly the cheese from "the original" of long ago be "to die from"!
But I have to agree that Ben's on West Third is really honest.(West 4th. St. subway stop Really exits on W. Third St.!~)...Ben's is the Coolest pizza environment ever and the pizza is Always good, near many different variety available, too. It is an un-pretentious but busy place with lots of table, super easy "surrounded by and out" and always full of heaps "village types".

No listing of great NYC pizzas would be complete minus mentioning Grimaldi's (on Old Fulton Street in Brooklyn).
Two of my other favorite spots not previously mentioned are Totonnos (multiple locations; the one within Coney Island is the best but the one on East 82nd street is good too) and Two Boots (multiple locations; the best is on Ave. A and 4th St. contained by the East Village).
Of these three, Two Boots sells by the slice. If you're contained by the East Village, check it out!

The best in New York is a tough claim to produce objectively as no two New Yorkers will quite agree. I'll do my best though.
John's on 44th between 7th and 8th is one of my favorites, but it's not exactly New York style, it's a cross between New York and Italian style. Excellent pizza. There are other locations for John's, the untested is on Bleeker St., but the 44th street location is better. Long lines, get near early.
Lombardi's is the first pizza place within the USA. Before opening his own place, Totonno be the chef at Lombardi's. Both claim to have created the recipe for the first New York Pizza and influence the other stole it. Both are classics.
There are three places that are allowed to call themselves rays, Famous Rays, Famous Original Rays, and Ray Bari. Those three hold a partnership and routinely sue other places that use the name Rays on a pizza place. Most New Yorkers really resembling one of those three and really don't like the other two. I close to Famous Original, but if I'm being object it would be hard to articulate it's the best.
Moving on to less prominent places that are just damn well brought-up, there's Sam's Pizza on 231st and Broadway in the Bronx, but I don't have a sneaking suspicion that you'll want to go adjectives the way up at hand for pizza. Villa Pizza on West 10th st and 7th Ave is one of my favorites as well. Don't be confused by the place contained by Times Sq. with a similar entitle, that is not New York style, it's more similar to sbarro's. Avoid it like the plague.
Your bottom dash best bet for classic New York style that everybody I know loves is Ben's Pizzaria on 123 MacDougal St. Great neighborhood too. Lots to do and see.

My all time favorite be a little place call Pizza Works on 91st and lex, but it closed many years ago because the owner never compensated his taxes I heard.
If you listen to anyone here, I don't surmise you'll get a unpromising slice. (At John's you won't get a slice at adjectives, they pride themselves on selling their pizzas only as complete pies. I'm not sure why this is suppossed to be a source of pride.)
I was watching the travel warren today and they said that you have to try Lombardi's or Ray's Pizza.
