Can someone recommend a flawless itinerary for seeing northern california on a budget?
I'm flying in to san francisco for a week to 10 days and obligation some advice for things to see/do. My friend lives within san francisco so i will be staying there most of the time. I will know how to splurge on 1 or 2 nights within a hotel. I'm looking to do mostly free/cheap sightseeing, with mostly year trips. I know I do want to drive up the coast and see the wine country..that will be the most expensive part. Any other suggestions?
Answers:
SAm covered the bay nouns for you quite resourcefully. If you want to venture into the Valley Sacramento have Old Sacramento and a R/R musuem, for art theres the Crocker in Sac also, Oakland have a great musuem also. Or you might think in the region of the gold country essential Angels Camp and Colombia.
for your overnight splurge--drive down to monterey & stay somewhere on the water.
things to see:
SF: pier 39, golden take, china town, the castro
Napa/Sonoma: check out Cline Winery--great place.
other places: Muir Woods, Sausalito, S. Lake Tahoe...
Go check out the Redwood National Forest. There's also greatly of sightseeing in the City (Golden Gate Bridge, Golden Gate Park, Palace of Fine Arts, Twisty Lombard Street, Fisherman's Wharf, Union Square - though mostly for shopping, Park Presidio, Alcatraz Island, Bike on Angel Island). Also, Monterey Bay's individual a 2 hour drive which is really nice too.
