It's actually mixed.
The Hunters Point unit of L.I.C. (south of the Queensboro Bridge) is actually anyone re-gentrified with expensive luxury apartments and condos that own gone up over the past 10 years or so due to general public being "priced out" of Manhattan.
As a result, you are seeing that "Manhattan" crowd moving into the neighborhood since it is EXTREMELY close to Manhattan by at lowest one subway stop. That part, which be predominantly factories, have become safe. Stores and laundromats are popping up nearby.
On the other hand, the nouns NORTH of the Queensboro Bridge and South of Broadway (north of it is Astoria) is either poor or surrounded by the areas at or near to the housing projects (Queensbridge and Ravenswood Houses)...pretty rough. On solid streets in that slice, you can actually find low-priced hookers walking around.
Long Island City is in reality quite expensive currently - all the fresh luxury condo's going up, because it's so darn close to Manhattan. TONS of markets and laundry around (not to mention expensive strip clubs!), and impressively VERY close to subways and 10 minutes to Manhattan. If you're buying, buy in Long Island City. If you're renting, rent a bit more to the northeast and hit up Astoria. Cheap, good-looking, delicious Astoria!
