Marshall, Tx is nice. It is about an hour east of Dallas.
There is a considerable pottery there that is to say really fun. (You can watch the master potters at work).
Houses are out-of-date and quaint - during the Christmas season the entire town lights itself up. Really gorgeous.

Waxahatchie has a nice Medieval Festival every year. I love it.
Gainsville is going on for an hour away and is near the Oklahoma border. It have some outlet malls.

Burleson is fairly small and really nice. I'd vote right at an hour though.
Fink, Shady Shores, Crowley, West, and Copper Canyon are appropriate ones. Crowley and West are south of Dallas and Fink, Shady Shores, and Copper Canyon are south of Dallas.
