the person above me is right, lots of airports. Thats San Diego for you, nearby are many more areas that you dont hear them as much, I used to live within Chula Vista, and would only hear them on cloudy days, impose the military aircraft would fly over a lot lower. We also hold a military airbase in imperial seaside and in Coronado island.
Funny entity is that there are in fact people who move close to the airports, after complain to the city about the racket, go integer, why would they move close to airport?
Because the family of San Diego have not be able to move their airport out of downtown, at hand are giant passenger planes coming and going all the time. To variety matters worse, near is a military air paddock just north of town a few miles. There are also numerous small airports around the edges. You are never far from airplane noise.
If you are really lucky, in Mission Beach and Pacific Beach, and parts of La Jolla, you don't hear them as much.
However, within is also a train running right down the coast, and in heaps places you can hear either the train, or possibly the light guiderail cars, which also make profusely of noise. There are three or four core freeways, and most motels and hotels are as near to them as possible, and they are adjectives noisy.
In Pacific Beach, nearby is a roller coaster which makes pandemonium, but you can only hear it if you are handy, and then it can upset you half to passing if you don't know about it.
San Diego is a tremendously big, noisy city, but lots of fun. I love it within.

I newly found out something. The new police cars hold a siren on them called the rumbler. When that bugger go off, it might remind you of a plane. Was in attendance a police car siren sounding when you asked your interrogate?
we get plane thud here almost all the time.
